Feeling Your Feelings
As a therapist, I often hear my clients ask, “How do I make these feelings go away?” Or express, “I don’t want to feel this way anymore.”
Do you know what I tell them? I wish I could wave a magic wand and make all of your difficult emotions disappear. What if I told you that feeling all those uncomfortable feelings is an important human experience? That each emotion can tell us something significant about ourselves. I even offer, how can we know happiness without experiencing loneliness or grief?
What I mean to say is that therapy isn’t meant to fix your feelings but instead to help you learn to walk through them. To have someone sit with you, feel it with you, all while teaching you how to cope effectively and take action assertively.
My greatest hope for my clients is that they can gain some confidence in their ability to experience challenges and make it to the other side. To interrupt the cycles that worsen those experiences or prolong the pain and guide them towards their most fulfilling life. True happiness emerges when we overcome the emotional burdens that test us.
